THE CABO SAN LUCAS FISHING REPORT FOR THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET

High billfish boat for the week was the "Tuna Time", reporting in with 12 stripers released, 12 yellowfin tuna and 1 thresher shark for 5 days fished.  According to the owner, Captain Roberto Marquez, the billfish bite was the result of drift fishing the Cabo Falso Drop Off Area using live bait and sinkers and the yellowfin tuna all came from the Jaime Bank from tuna running with the porpoise.  The overall combined fish counts for a total of 36 days fished reflected 26 stripers, (24 released) 5 dorado, 17 yellowfin tuna, 19 skipjack, 1 thresher shark, 2 mako shark, (1 released) and 5 toros, (jack crevalles).

Cabo Climate:  A partly cloudy day for Sunday that turned into a full week of sunshine days following.  Daytime air temps averaged 80.4 and nights a little cooler at 64 degrees.  Humidity level at 55.4% average.

Sea Conditions:  Surface breezes flowing in from the southwest at an average of 7.4 mph.  Water temps that now range from the Finger Bank on the Pacific side to Las Frailes on the Sea of Cortez side, are all in the 73-74 degree ranges.

Best Fishing Area:  The billfish bite was best in the Cabo Falso Drop Off area and the tuna bite was best at Jaime Banks.

Best Bait/Lure:  Drift fishing live baits were best for the billfish.  Tuna were eager to bite on the varied colors of feathers, cedar plugs, tuna clones and more.  

Bait Supply:  Excellent bait supply for caballitos and still some mackerel available, all at the $3.00 per bait rate.

THE MAZATLAN FISHING REPORT FOR THE ARIES SPORTFISHING FLEET, EL CID MEGA RESORT AND MARINA EL CID, PACIFIC)

The inshore fishing has been impressive this past week and the numbers of fish caught continue to be near limits for some of the species, especially the red snappers.  The fishing report for the inshore waters this past week reflected a great catch for 8 days fished that reflected 1 striper, 20 seabass, 10 white snappers, 19 triggerfish and 163 red snappers.  The off shore waters entertained a total of 28 days fished that reflected 4 stripers, (1 released) 10 dorado and 6 yellowfin tuna.  

Mazatlan Climate:  A sunny and warm week that provided an average daytime temperature of 85 degrees and nights at 75.  Humidity ratio averaged 75% for the week.  

Sea Conditions:  The water temps have been dwindling downward over the past week or so and the inshore temp is now at 73 degrees and the off shore temp at 75 degrees.  Surface breezes flowing in mostly from the westerly directions at 7.5 mph., making for some very comfortable off shore fishing.

Best Fishing Area:  The off shore waters started at about 16-17 miles with the boats woking in all directions from there.  No concentration of fish reported in any of the off shore waters.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged bait were best for the billfish and even for the dorado but the tuna were taken on tuna feathers of various colors.

Bait Supplies:  Good bait supplies for freshly caught baits for rigging and live bait remains available at he $1.00 per bait rate.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

We had a glowing report come in from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo today that reflected an incredible surge in fishing action for sailfish, marlin, dorado and yellowfin tuna and a completely renewed bite for the inshore fishing, too, including skipjack, jack crevalles and even some roosterfish showing up in the mix.  According to our local area reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen, the fish are popping up in a very wide area that ranges from about 7 miles out front of the bay and on out to about 20 miles or so and there is very good catching action the entire distance.

IZ Climate:  It was a mostly sunny and warm week with the average daytime temps at 83 degrees and the nights hovering at about 71 degrees.  The humidity ratio is holding at about 75%.  Calm ocean and excellent fishing weather.

Sea Conditions:  In shore water temps at 81 degrees and rising to 82 degrees for the off shore waters.  Pristine blue waters start at about a mile out front of the bay.  Tropical surface breezes flowing mostly from the southwesterly directions at an average of 7.5 mph.

Best Fishing Areas:  An enormously wide area of big game fish, including marlin, sailfish, dorado and yellowfin tuna that are keeping the anglers very busy on this year's beginning of the catching action and it all starts at about 7 miles off shore and continues on for the next 13 miles or so.  There is probably more fish beyond the 20 mile mark but there is just no reason to extend the burning of fuel.

Best Bait/Lures:  Rigged baits are working very well and so are live baits and Cedar plus, tuna feathers and so much more.  The fish are anxious to bite most everything moving through the water right now and the anglers are having terrific fun fishing days.

Bait Supplies:  Good bait supplies that include freshly caught baits for trolling and live bait at $5.00 per dozen.

THE PUERTO MORELOS FISHING REPORT FOR THE MARINA EL CID SPORTFISHING FLEET, (CANCUN TO COZUMEL, CARIBBEAN)

Unfortunately, the port was closed for a total of 3 days the past week that included New Year's Day, along with one day before and one day after.  The fishing action continued to be productive for most of the anglers and the report reflected a total of 30 days fished that resulted in a 13 fish mixed bag catch that included 1 sailfish, 19 amberjack, 7 triggerfish, 29 snappers, 45 groupers, 21 grunts, 5 bonito, 5 sawfish, 77 chackchi, 4 king mackerel, 8 banana fish, 1 rubia and 6 giant Atlantic barracudas.  Overall, fishing continues to be good and the anglers are enjoying their catching action in the near off shore waters.

PM Climate:  Sunday & Monday provided cloudy conditions and some scattered showers but the remainder of the week was mostly sunny and warm conditions.  Daytime air was 81.8 average and nights at 70.5.  Humidity held at 75.6% averages,

Sea Conditions:  Water temps stable at 82 degrees.  Surface breezes flowing mostly from the easterly directions and averaged about 6 mph.

Best Bait:  Continues to be the ballyhoo baits that are so very populous throughout this area and the bait of choice for the anglers and the crews.

Bait Supplies:  The over abundance of ballyhoo baits in this are continues to provide a terrific everyday supply of freshly caught baits for rigging.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to our Zihuatanejo area reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen, it was kind of a split week's fishing action with the first part of the week's action very good and the brighter the moon got, the slower the action became.  During the early part of the week the sailfish and stripers were eager to bite and even the dorado came to offer their share of bite action, too and better yet, the bite was right at the 8-mile mark from the entrance to the Bay.  The blue water is within a mile of the shoreline but the inshore fishing was very slow,  "We saw very few fish all along the coast from Valentin to Salidita.

IZ Climate:  It was one of those 50-50 partly cloudy & sunny week with a bright and sunshiny weekend for the anglers.  Daytime temps holding at 86 degrees and nights at 72.8 average.  Humidity Level at 69.8% average.

Sea Conditions:  Surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions at an average of 6.8 mph over mostly calm seas.  Inshore and offshore sea temps varied a single degree from 83 to 84.

Best Fishing Area:  During the early part of the week the best fishing started right about the 8-mile mark and seemed to diminish with the full moon conditions.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were working exceptionally well for he billfish and the dorado.

Bait Supply:  Very good supply of bait with freshly caught rigging baits available on a daily basis and provided gratis with the charters.  Live bait is $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Another terrific fishing report from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo reflecting very good marlin and sailfish action in the off shore waters, starting at about 15 miles or so and the yellowfin tuna were holding well at the 40 mile mark with 20-40 kg. tuna.  The inshore action, especially along the beaches at valentin river, were offering good roosterfish and jack crevalle action, along with a few Sierras and bonitos.  According to Captain Chiro Barrigan and his first class mate, Luis, aboard he 35' Bertram sportfisher, "Bloody Hook", reported a 2 sailfish day and a single 20 lb. yellowfin tuna for their angler, Mr. Ken Kinlien earlier in the week and followed that up with an off shore sailfish and then moved in shore for , jack cravelle and many bonitos with Mr. Jesse & friends on a 2nd day.  Overall, the fishing and the weather have been providing very well for the anglers.

IZ Climate:  Air temps varied from 74 nights to 91 daytime highs and  67.5% humidity level.  Mostly sunny and warm with a few scattered clouds mixed in for the week.

Sea Conditions:  Water temps for the in shore waters holding well at 83-84 and a 67.5 average humidity level.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 15 miles for the billfish and then, moving out to about 40 miles for the yellowfin tuna.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits working very well for the billfish and live baits working well for the roosterfish and jack crevalle.

Bait Supply:  A very good supply of bait this past week and making it easier to have plenty of baits for rigging and live bait for the roosterfish and jack crevalles.

XTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

WOW!  What a huge difference a week can make in the fishing results in a single area.  Ou report for the week was a complete reverse of last week and the fishing changed in a full circle and spiraled upward like a championship football being tossed to a winning touchdown receiver.  Captain Temo Verboonen, our on-location reporter, had only good things to say about the past week from the proximity to the Bay, the water color, water temps and the overall fish bite fo both, inshore and offshore.  You could almost see the smile on his face by reading his report.He reported a great week for the off shore anglers.  The billfish were very cooperative almost all week with a good bite on the blue marlin and better bite on the sailfish, with the action starting at about the 15-mile mark, just as the water changes to clean blue.  Really a good time for using a fly rod for the sailfish.  The inshore fishing was also very good for the jack crevalle and for roosterfish by Valentin River and they are mixed in with the Sierras and bonitos.  

IZ Climate:  Air temperatures varied from 74 nights to 91 daytime highs and a 67.5 average humidity level.  A mostly sunny and near perfect weather &  fishing week.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps at 83 in shore to 86-87 off shore.  Tropical surface breezes varied from near calm mornings to about 7-8 mph in early afternoons.  Good clarity at about 15 miles.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 15 miles, where the water clarity changes from off color greenish to perfect blue and the fish are eager to bite.

Best Lure/Bait:  Fresh baits for rigging and live baits are working very well for the anglers as are artificials & streamers.

Bait Supply:  Excellent for both, freshly caught baits for rigging and live baits at $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Last week was the International Sailfish Tournament from Zihuatanejo that reflected a total of 170 boats entered into what turned out to be difficult fishing and a ways off shore, starting at about the 28 mile mark.  Everything inside that range was green or off colored waters and pretty much void of the billfish.  As it was, the overall fishing was pretty slow for sailfish and marlin and the finality of the event reflected the 1st place winner, taken aboard the sportfisher, "Costa Brava", to be a 38.8 kilo (85.36 lbs.) sailfish, followed by a 35.4 kilo, (77.88 lbs) taken aboard the "Oceana", for 2nd and a 34 kilo, (74.8 lbs.) taken aboard the sportfisher, "Borracho", for 3rd place.  Largest marlin was an 80.6 kilo, (177.32 blue Marlin), taken aboard the sportfisher, "El Vikingo".  No other fish were reported in the event to qualify.  The inshore waters, in addition to being off-colored and cooler, was rough, bumpy and windy for the most part and void of fishing action and very little sea life in general.

IZ Climate:  A few high passing clouds for most of the days and a partly cloudy day for Monday  but overall, lots of sunshine through the week with temps varied from 73 nights to 90 daytime highs and an average of 68.5 humidity level.

Sea Conditions:  Tropical surface breezes flowing in from the westerly directions and varied from fairly calm mornings to 9-10 mph by late mornings thru afternoons.  Rough and bumpy waters for the inshore areas.  Water clarity was green to aout 28 miles or so and overall, the temps were down a degree or two, reflecting 80 degrees inshore and not much better for the off shore waters.

Best Fishing Area:  Clear water started at about 28 miles off shore where the bite actually started.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged trolling baits proved to be the best bet for the winning fish, including the smaller blue marlin.

Bait Availability:  Remained excellent for the entire fishing event and week with good quality fresh caught rigging baits and a good availability for live bait, too, at the $5.00 per dozen rate.

IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

A much better fishing week was reported by Captain Temo Verboonen, along with an increase in anglers at the pier in the mornings.  The full moon seemed to have little effect on the catching for a change and the marlin and sailfish were cooperating on a daily basis for the fleet and even the tunas returned to add to the action.  The inshore fishing picked up considerably and was offering good roosterfish and jack crevalle action on the spinning tackle.  Temo added, it was a great weather week with mosly clean waters from the shorteline to the off shore wates and calm sea conditions.

IZ Climate:  A few passing high clouds that turned to sunshine and provided excellent temps that varied from 70 nights to 93 daytime highs and a 59% humidity level.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps varied from 82-83 inshore and 84-85 off shore.  Surface breezes mostly from the westerly directions that varied from near calm mornings to about 9 mph in the afternoons.

Best Fishing Area:  Started at about 8 miles offshore, as the water turned crystal clear and blue.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were working very well or the billfish and the tunas.  Roosters and jacks biting live baits and artificials for the inshore action.

XTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to Captain Temo Veroonen, the close in yellowfin tuna are pretty much gone from the area and left in the belly of the tuna seiners that let nothing much but the scales.  The few that successfully escaped have moved farther offshore from their 6 miles of last weeks action.  There are more marlin strikes right now in the 220-275 lb. ranges and that action starts just past the 8-mile mark where the greener water turns to deep blue and clear.  The inshore fishing has perked back up again and is fine for jack crevalles, Spanish mackerel, (aka Sierras) bonitos and a few roosterfish in the mix.  Not too many anglers showing up at the dock in the mornings.

IZ Climate:  Air temps very good and varied from 78 nights to 94 daytime highs and a 46% average humidity level.  Some morning clouds and high level clouds but followed with an abundance of sunshine for the area.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps stable at 81 inshore to 83 offshore.  Sea surface conditions enjoying soft westerly breezes in the 6-7 mph ranges.

Best Fishing Area:  The billfish are staring at about 8 miles offshore and at the edge of the water clarity change from greenish to pristine blue.

Best Bait/Lures:  Rigged baits and bigger lures getting the best action for the billfish.  Live baits working well for the inshore fishing for jacks and roosterfish.

Bait Supplies:  Remain plentiful and readily available.  Fresh rigging baits provided with the charter and live baits are $5.00 per dozen.
